Oceanic Scuba Gear
Maybe you’ve been diving for a while or maybe you are just starting out. Either way, when you decide to move from your local lakes and bays into the ocean, you’re jumping into an entirely new world. The ocean is much more extreme in conditions and has many more hazards. However, it also contains wonderful creatures and sites that you can’t find anywhere else. To get started you’ll need some good oceanic scuba gear.
Aside from your regular equipment, one of the primary pieces of equipment you’ll need is a good exposure suit. Even if you live in the tropics, once you get out into the ocean, you’ll probably be exposed to much lower water temperatures than you would elsewhere. This means either a thicker wetsuit or even a dry suit to make sure you stay warm. This can also mean the addition of a hood, booties and gloves for the same reasons.
Next, you’ll need a much more powerful dive flag. In the ocean, much larger vessels can traffic the waters, so wherever you’re at, you’ll need to let people know. Usually you can just fly a small flag or hang it from a boat, but invest in a large one to ensure there are no difficulties.
Because the ocean is deeper and usually shore is less close, you’ll need as much redundant safety equipment as possible. This means extra regulators, emergency horns, straps, and lights in case any emergency happens.
Finally, buy books on your diving location to make sure that you are well informed on the conditions and currents wherever you go.
